Recap: The 2026 AI & Health Symposium

On Friday, September 11, more than 230 participants gathered at the North Campus Research Complex for the fifth annual AI & Health Symposium, creating opportunities for networking, exchanging ideas, and building collaborations across U-M’s AI and health communities. Attendees represented more than 14 schools and colleges across the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses.

Keynote speakers Byron Wallace, PhD, of Northeastern University, and Karandeep Singh, MD, MMSc, of UC San Diego, explored the potential of mechanistic interpretability in healthcare and the role of AI and automation in achieving high-quality care. The program also featured interactive tabletop discussions connecting participants with research collaborators and campus resources, a poster session, and a panel on building successful academic-industry partnerships.

Sponsored by e-HAIL and AI&DHI, with additional support from the Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation (IHPI), the symposium emphasized collaboration across disciplines to advance research and improve health.
